There are several ways. One is your vin plate. Look for W56 somewhere on your doorjam vin plate, or G58 I believe. You've got one of the two.

My understanding is that W56 came on trucks in your model year that had a 22RE and manual hubs. The G58 came on trucks with a 22RE and an ADD front end.

Probably best just to call them directly. They are usually very helpful and shipping was quick for me. Got it within a few days.

Information worth repeating and it may shed some light on Brian's difficulty buying the rubber seat separately as he details here: http://www.brian894x4.com/Shifter.html

When you go to the dealer to get the socket and seat, tell them you have a G54 carborated style 5 speed trans from a 86 4x4.

Both G and W transmissions use the same white nylon socket, however, to purchase the green shifter seat on a '85-'89 W56, they will want to sell you the six bolt aluminun shifter base :flipoff2:
By telling them that you have a G54 trans, the $11.57 seat fits your base perfect. I will post the Toyota numbers in the AM when I get to the shop.

Hope the cheap fix does the trick, if not, both the socket and seat will also fit the R151F.

How many times do we overlook the small things and fear the worst.

For the record;
Socket 33548-31010 $4.26
Seat 33505-35020 $11.64

The seat and socket fit all;
'81-'82 L45, 50
'83 L52
'84-'85 G52
'85-'87 G54
'89-'95 G58
'85-'95 W56
'96-'03 W59
'86-'87 R151F
'88-'03 R150F

The seat and socket will not fit the '79-'80 L43.

To get the seat for the '85-'89 W56
33570-14030 $86.77
Complete 6 bolt aluminun single handle shifter base with seat.

Getting an R151F would save you from having to buy a $350 adapter and would likely be hooked to a 23 spline t-case, so there is the potential for cost savings depending on your goals and the need to rebuild the tranny. Also note that aftermarket (4.0, 4.7, 5.0) gears are the same price for 21 or 23 spline, so you could source a 21 spline case and add 23 spline gears to it to save money.

I agree that the lower first gear is unnecessary for Bill's application, but I think that it has more to do with the dual cases. The 3.4 isn't exactly a stump pulling engine.

Well, ok- but you left the cost of purchasing the R151 out of the equation! It really is pretty much internally the same as an R150 (1st gear ratio excepted), which he has, except for the tailpiece. I'd bet a decent R151 will cost more than his V6 adapter. As far as a regeared tcase, net/net I agree, the cost is the same IF he's gonna regear immediately. FWIW, I am running a 21 spline rear case, but it is Marlin's total spline design, with which they have had no failures. Not worried.

I dunno, my 3.4 pulls stumps pretty well. The superfluity of the lower first gear probably has to do with 5.29s more than dual cases! It could pull 4.88s easily (but I'm only running 35s).

One enduring advantage of the R151 is that my driveline with dual cases is that much shorter than it would be with an R150 and adapter. I'm not in TJ land with that concern, but it helps.

[edit] I've often wondered what would be involved in retrofitting an R151 tailpiece to an R150...

I guess that I did not word that very well. Buying a R151F will likely not cost more than an adapter AND rebuilding his current R150F, however if the turbo tranny needs to be rebuilt than all bets are off.

Really? I've got 4.88s and 33s on the 4Runner and I don't think this engine has much low end power at all. If I try to let it lug down it just stalls. I am constantly slipping the clutch in rockcrawling situations (which admittedly isn't what this vehicle was designed for).

I was wondering if a transmission from a 2wd turbo p/u, R151F?, will accept a 4 cylinder t-case? Found one in the junk yard.

Tailpiece, and possibly the rear mainshaft, will not bring joy to you. If you found that one, and a junker 4wd R151, you might have some joy by transmogrifying them together.

Holy cascading quote boxes, Harry! That's interesting. Mine pulls pretty strong, though I do have a 4.7 gearset in the rear tcase. Lots of times I do run the stock gearset in the front though. Maybe I'm spoiled? But it pulls great on the street! Almost, barely, as if, geared a tad too low. Not enough to plunk down cold hard and tear things apart though, and when towing it's nice.
