Getting the Wheeling Fever
OK, so I know I can fit 33's without any lift (thanks Alex). I think 35's are doable with a two inch lift (baring any real negative offset wheels).

My next question goes back to wheel options...

I want to get rid of those NASTY factory spider wheels from the 01 model.

I like the looks of black Rock Crawler wheels and am trying to figure out what backspacing to get.

Factory wheels are 16x7 +44 offset 5.75" BS

I want to run 8" wheels, but I'm having a hard time finding them with a ppositive offset. I think a 5-5.25" BS would be ideal...Most of what I find are 4.5 BS which is dead center of the wheel.

Thoughts?

I think the backspacing you're looking for is way too much. 5-5.25 BS will tuck the wheels way into the wells and, if you are running a wider tire, may cause rubbing. In fact, the 4.5 with wider tire may be too much. If you can gat a 3.75 or 3.5 BS, I think that would be ideal. Not to mention the wider stance will look and feel better.

I don't think you'll find a wheel with the BS you're looking for unless you have them made...

Good Luck (from the guy who is too poor to afford a Gen 3)!

Edit: Apparently I'm talking out of my butt. After re-reading the above posts, it looks like the wider tires will fit your rig with factory BS. I guess I don't get it. Anyway, the biggest BS I've ever seen on the Steelies is 4.5. My guess is to go with those if you really like the look.

Here is the closest thing I could find to your criteria. They won't break the bank with free shipping, and they look just like mine .

Have a look...

When these tires wear out I am going to be putting diff rims on to get the tires sticking out the fenders some. Prob going to be working towards 6" wider on both sides total with diff rims/tires.
And just so you know....35's WONT fit without some trimming up front cause there is about 1/2 inch space with 33s. Just so you know.

Those won't work they are not going to clear the brake calipers. In fact it's pretty hard to find wheels that will. I've got some different wheels for my Gen2 none works because of caliper clearence. Also remember that Monty wheels are hub centeric and that hub center bore is only 78mm. I belive, pretty much any other, but stock offset, wheel will cause rubbing with 33"

Agree with what you said Alex. The tires stick out any further and there will need to be some modifications done to the bumper.....its just tupperware anyways....

Well, I tried...

My older truck doesn't have the same issues as yours I guess. Good luck finding what you want!

OK, I understand the old Hubcentric deal (I'm a '80's model BMW owner).

Every wheel I find on the net (including Discount) is not hubcentric. I see plenty of Mitsu's running around with 20's (gay) so I am thinking that it is not as big of a deal on the Montero?...
Click here to see the wheels I want.

Also, I'm not afraid to cut some of the "Tupperware" off...I've already removed the lower sill pieces and will have rock rails built to fit.
