Are you talking about changing out the stock turbo with the Intercooler turbo?

Hi Brian,

I am thinking about adding an interooler to the oringinal setup but I dont know It will make any diff in performance. I want to see if anyone has done this before and their opinion on it.

Cheers,
Trong

Check the archives. I remember reading about the differance between the two here somewhere.
Also Acy76 has a blog where he installed the later engine with the intercooler

Do it.

Any turbo will benefit from an intercooler. But the higher boost you're running, the more you will gain.

Corky Bell's _Maximum Boost_ is an excellent primer on turbocharging. Required reading if you're thinking about modifying your existing system.

If I recall correctly, his advice is to raise the boost to compensate for the pressure drop caused by the intercooler. This would also require an accompanying increase in fuel delivery to take advantage of the added boost pressure. So, the intercooler will allow you to operate with more boost safely, but you will need to re-tune the engine to take advantage of it.

Of course even without raising the boost, your engine will be getting more air molecules because the air is now cooler and denser.

If you so desire you can do the more air/more fuel/more air/more fuel leapfrog until you start blowing too much smoke or too many engines.

I'd advise a pyrometer before you up the fueling much at all.

Thanks all for your input and advices. I guess to increase turbo boost I just need to shorten the linkage that connects to the waste-gate? What sort of pressure should I increase it to? I think it comes to 6-8psi for standard setup? I will install the gauge before I make any change to this.

Also, How do I increase fuel to the system on this engine? I though this can not be done on diesel engine?
Is it better to run the pipes as short as possible?

Cheers

You won't need to increase the boost unless you're chasing the performance. In that case you'll be wanting more fuel and boost.

Once you get your pyro gauge installed it'll make a lot more sense. Make sure the temp probe is installed before the turbo, after the turbo isn't as relevant.

More air (from higher boost) = cooler exhaust temps
Better intercooler = cooler exhaust temps
More fuel = hotter exhaust temps.

OK, I found a small intercooler and an aftermarket bonnet scoop. I need to modify the intake pipe (side way instead of pointing backward to the turbo), then make the bracket for the intercooler...Hopefully I can get it in place by next week. The next thing would be turbo boost + increase fuel (still dont know how to do this yet) javascript:void(0)
