For LA, you're best bet for winter wheeling is Anza Borrego State Park and the surrounding area. They have good maps avaialble from the Ranger Stations and none of the trails are very difficult.

During the summer, you have three national forest around you: Angeles, Los Padres and San Bernardino. Again, get maps from the Ranger Stations.

Best bet is find other people to show you around. The book that holger suggestedis good. Finding a Club Local to you is also good. Check the Cal4wheel.com web site for Local Club listings.
