Do you mean this little lever below the mirror controls? I think that's the "fast idle" lever.

damn I wish I had that fast idle lever...I gotta put a brick on my gas pedal hahah.

Phil what the hell makes your pajero better starting than the rest of ours.

His was basically new, wasn't it? 35000Kms or so if I remember right. Let's all just call him a bastard. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" />

I'm wondering if us other poor suckers need to check the function of our glow-plugs?

I hear some clicking, the lights go dim, more clicking, lights bright, I turn the key and it splutters to life... How to check the function of individual glow plugs? Solenoids? Anyone...? Anyone...?

PS - While PHIL had low mileage at acquisition he is racking it up FAST. Soon, he will feel justified in abusing the beater off road... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Really? I thought most JDM diesels had them? Or am I way off and it's a choke?

Loosen (repeat only loosen) each of the 3mm nuts at the top of the glow plug. For the main wire coming from the relay to Glow plug #3 carefully loosen the nut and save in a safe place.. Wiggle bus bar out and check continuity of each plug to block.. it must be below 1 ohm at the lowest ohm meter setting (e.g 200 ohm setting). Replace any plugs that show more than 1 ohm. While the buss bar is off check it for corrosion and clean where necessary. Reconnect the busbar, wiggling it under the 3mm nuts and reconnect the power , again inspecting the cable for good connections (e.g no white or brown corrosion etc etc) .. Then turn key and measure voltage at the glow plugs.. You should se 6.0 to 6.3 V for 5 to 7 seconds.. If you have that then you have full glow plug action..

-30C this morning in Langdon ('bout 40 miles from Phil) and she started up! Shocked the $h!t out of me. It weren't purdy, but after cranking over for about 20 seconds she spit and coughed and away she went. I turned on the seat heaters, let it idle for about 15 minutes and the heat guage was about 25% when I drove away and my buns were nice and toasty. :-)

I put in brand new Interstate M34 batteries this fall and even when the kids leave the interior light on all night she fires up like a dream. The batteries were about $110.00 each and come with a 7 year warranty. I highly recommend them. I have a much bigger one in my Mercedes Diesel ('82 300SD) and it spins it over like a petrol model.

The lever down and to the right is a throttle advance - nothing more. It's directly connected to the throttle cable. Had one in every JDM diesel I've imported. Pajero, Delica, Terrano, Town Ace, they've all got them.

I got 9.5 volts for about 5 seconds measuring from the bus bar to the negative terminal of the battery... Thoughts?
When it is above freezing in my garage I will resistance test the individual glow plugs. They have the green tops.

well where that throttle advance lever is I just have a hole. now im pissed if somebody took this out, I could really use this. I should see if the wires are under the dash, maybe I can rig something up. and with the 2 batteries....one is for accesories and one is for starting the truck only

Nigel, Princess Auto sells a twist knob that'll work fine: I had one set up in my petrol Montero, and can show you how I did it if you want? But how come your batteries are not running together for startup? Did you add one, or did it come with two? The OE config runs em together, acting like one big battery...

Neo, my glowplugs are greentop too. I think they're the "fast cycle" or some such term.

Did you check each plug individually first? If you did 9.5 V is a bit too good (I would guess).. The more likely scenario is that one or 2 plugs are low or bad. This makes the current draw low.. Low current draw makes a smaller voltage drop across the ballast resistor hence your 9.5V reading..

Assuming that 1 or more glow plugs is pooched...where/what to buy replacements? Napa lists one but it does not seem to have a green top and is listed as being a 12 volt item. Anyone replaced these in Canada?
