That's about what I did with mine. I put a piece of light aluminum angle stock behind the valance and "T"d it into the cross member and drilled through it and the valance to give it more strength.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I think Flannelman's set up is the direction I'm heading. I really only need them for driving through snow and heavy deer traffic at night. Having them as low as possible while still protected seems to by the thing to do
