Getting the Wheeling Fever
hello, I have a 99' taco. The heater in it went out for no reason. I checked coolant levels. They're fine. I checked thermostat...it's fine. The heater fan works...it's just not hot air. I'm guessing it's the heater core....i just wanted to let you guys know before I take it in. I usually check all the inexpensive things out and troubleshoot beforehand. give me the knowledge....

Hold up. There is a part called a BLOWER RESISTOR which is typically the culprit. Usually lives behind the blower fan.
Dealer-only part for around $25, or hit the local junkyards.

Also, a quick-n-dirty check on clogs in the radiator. Run vehicle up to operating temp. Shut off. Lightly touch fingers to radiator fins. Cool spots are clogs.

is there any symptoms to actually check if it's the resistor?

You already have a symptom.

I *think* the resistance values are in the FSM sticky'd above. Not sure if the later rigs use the same one. I know the older trucks had 3 and 4 speed blower speeds, but your switch controls that, not the resistor.

You'd have to stick your nose under there to disconnect it anyway.

if it's not the resistor than it's the core? tomorrow i'll start working on it.

Check the other stuff I told you to also. Cores ARE NOT CHEAP, and they're a beech to tear down to even get to them. Good luck and take your time.

what does the resistor consist of? is it an electrical looking resistor?if it doesn't control the blower speed? what does it control?it's not in my shop manual.

If you're looking at something that is NOT the FSM, you're NOT going to see it. That's why I pointed you to the one that's sticky'd.

www.4Crawler.com I think he's got a pic of one posted over there. Looks like toaster coils.

In the original post he says the heater fan works but no heat.If the fan did not work or more likley did not work on all speeds, I would suspect the resistor. No heat could be from a bad valve or it not opening due to a linkage issue. The heater valve is located on the firewall above the valve cover. The heater core being pluged up is another possiblity.

I checked the inlet and the outlet hoses on the firewall....the valve isn't letting coolant passed. I already special orderd the part from the dealership. I'm going to try that before i replace the heater core.
