Getting the Wheeling Fever

'89 22RE stock pickup with a loss of power. It started one day a few weeks back and now it's a mystery. Truck runs but no power especially on hills. New air filter, good fuel pressure, tuned up...thought maybe the knock sensor.
Knocked on it, and got no response on the timing, soooo we replaced the knock sensor. But that hasn't changed a thing.
Toyota service manuals seems to recommend the ECU next...ouch! Are these specific to the year and VIN or can I get a used ECU from any year off a 22RE?
Any other ideas?
Thanks.

Check the TPS to make sure it's set up properly and clean out the throttle body if it's gunked up.
Pull your codes for the heck of it and see if anything is stored; doesn't always have to set your check engine light.
Make sure vacuums are in good shape and properly connected.

I would check the TPS first. Those things cause all sorts of problems. If it is bad, it could be telling your ECU that your throttle is on idle while you have it floored.

ecu are pretty dependable. don't go out often. i'd look at tps before going for an ecu. anybody toy know have the same vintage truck? it's an easy swap out to try it. if you end up needing an ecu, i have a good tested spare i will sell reasonably out of my 87 .. but we would have to see if it is the same as an 89 unit. i am down in westchester county.

A wide range of ECUs will work - you try to get one with a simiar pin out and same auto or manual.

Did you adjust the valves when you did the tune-up, or just replace the plugs, wires, etc. Has your mpg's dropped off as well?

ecu are pretty dependable. don't go out often. i was gonna say the same thing. i have never seen or heard of an ecu going out....short of flooding out the truck or something like that. i'm gonna put my money on the converter. my 4Runner and Nissan D21 both had that symptom when the converters clogged up.

Yeah I had the mechanic check the convertor first as I was sure that was it. We did a pressure check on it and even pulled the exhaust to be sure. It's not the convertor.
I thought a bad TPS would show a idle problem. The mechanic doesn't think that's it. We did a carbon cleanout so there shouldn't be any stickiness in the throttle. Didn't touch the valves. The truck idles fine and revs fine but just has no power under a load...like a nice hill.
Truck is throwing the code for the knock sensor. We replaced that with a used one and now we are going to borrow a used ECU.I'm leaving town for a few days and the mechanic is going to try the ECU swap while I'm away. I'll post what I find. Oh yeah, the truck has about 108K on it.
Thanks for all the advice.

Make sure that knock sensor wire isn't buggered up.
