Hey Ashby,
If you find someone to fab up the basket, (ie. Roger B?) Let me know the pricing if they made two. I might be interested if its not too expensive. Always wanted a hitch mounted cargo rack to put a cooler on.

BTW, let me know if you still want the led lights from last week.

Yup thats the one thing I cant do...but also knew that going into the project was not being able to open the Rear door. I also clearanced the spare tire on the rear. Woulda been nice to add a pivot point to swing carrier away so the door could be open but its not that big of a deal to me. Just saved some work

Don't forget that with cargo on it you won't be able to open tailgate, and spare tire if mounted on the back may get in the way of hauling stuff.

This would be the case if the carrier was hitch level or bumper level when it is loaded.

Also be aware of your exhaust exit, you don't want to melt anything in the basket.

I have my tail pipe angled out to the side already. I noticed a few times when I had the rear window open to carry longer items I got a lot of exhaust fumes in the cabin when it was straight out the back.

Buy a welder, this will be a good starter project

I don't know the much about welders. What would a starter setup consist of and cost? I took wood shop back in grade school. Wish I took metal shop since I didn't learn anything I didn't already know in woodshop.

Thanks!

I bought one of these this past October: EXCESS CARGO CARRIER

I used it to haul a d44 from SA to Austin (about 100 miles). Had no problems. I was concerned at first because of the weight. But it worked flawless.

It is regular priced at 59.99 but goes on sale every two months or so for 39.99. I waited for the sale and saved 20.00.

You can buy it and have a local welding shop strengthen it if you want.

Wow that is very affordable. Did you have to strengthen it after you bought it? Was there alot of wobble?

Thanks!

That link is preciously what I was talking about. Ther eis no way you could build it for cheaper than that, when you figure in "all" costs. I do weld and do my own fab work and the HF rack is exactly what I'm going to buy. Now, if you want to still have it built for cheap and can make it out to Utah, I work for Beer (micro brew or import-you got to have some standards). And yes I can easily make it as to where you can still get your tailgate open.

No, i used it the way it came. It does have some movement when its empty, but once i put the load on it it was ok.
