Very impressive presentation of data. I 'll see if I can print this page! It took me a while to figure out the pattern out though.

Body Damage is Cool

We bought my wife's Sportage new in Feburary of 2000 (it's a 2000 model).
As of tonight (when I changed the plugs) it has just over 292,000 miles on it. Not Km, but miles.
This has easily been one of the best vehicles we've ever owned.

I had clocked my speedo on my GPS just before going to 31's. Speedo said I was going 65, but GPS said I was driving at 62 mph. When I got the bigger tires on. Speedo said I was going 65 and GPS read 71. So I just add 5 mph to my speedometer when ever I'm traveling faster than 40. or just keep traveling with a GPS in my cup holder!
"Do you know how fast you were going?" "Why yes, officer! My GPS said I was going 75.25 mph" hehe

Reminds me of one time I got done in a new car doing a bit over the limit:
Officer: Do you know how fast you were going? Me: About 120 km/h I think... Officer: Actually 119 km/h in a 100 zone. Do you have any reason for doing that speed? Me: No, but at least I know my speedo is accurate...
...and with that I got a ticket for doing less than 10 km/h over the limit (smaller fine). Copper reckoned it was the most honest answer he had heard all day.

the only problem with doing all this math is that actual tire sizes are almost never what the rated size printed on the sidewall says. in order to get concrete numbers, you have to take into account the static radius measurement. this is the distance between the center of the hub and the ground. you multiply that by 2 to get the measurement that is more accurately read by all the spinning parts of the drivetrain as your actual tire size, including the speedometer and odometer. then you do these calculations using that number. don't be alarmed, it will be much smaller than the stated tire size, but that's due, in part, to the slightly flattened footprint due to the weight of the vehicle, unless you have about 100 psi in your tires.
this is still not accurate if your tires are low because then you have to take into account the circumference of the tire still has to make it all the way around for each rotation, but the static radius won't give an accurate depiction of the circumference for a low tire. so then you get into all sorts of friction dynamics, because, really, there are times during the rotation of a low tire where the ruber is being dragged or pushed on the ground due to it slightly wrinkling and just not being stretched as much as it would be with the proper psi.
then again, proper psi is not the min and max labelled on the sidewall. it's usually much, much less as far as load-carrying capacity goes, but people's driving habits go from a leisurely trip to the store to hauling ass to get to work on time and if that sort of stress is put on a tire with a comfortable psi, the tire will fail, ala Ford Explorer.
done.

Wow Dave, Some good coffee this mornin, huh? Bottom line, if the odo says ove 200k, its still real impressive for a car that was priced as a throw away when it was new!

My Sportage has 208k on it. I'm thinking about selling it and getting the newest of the old style sportages I can find. I really enjoyed that car, and I could probably get some more miles out of it, but it's taking more and more effort. Plus, they still sell pretty cheap.
'95 Sportage 4x4 5speed SOHC bone stock, 200,000 miles and counting. The KIA isn't as powerful as the dually, but it sure is easier to park.

since I own a 2002 myself. I've been keeping an eye on the local resale market. I've seen the 2002 (all styles) offered in the paper for a low as 5000 to as high as 11,000 at a used car lot. All in Oregon of course... where your dollar goes further because we don't have a sales tax!
