My Supercharger's Favorite Gas #76982 03/06/03 03:26 AM

I've been running Shell 91 octane in my 2002 Supercharged 4runner for the past 2,000 miles. It would ping like hell merging on to the freeway, or anytime I gunned it. Now I'm using Unocal 76 91 octane. Under the same conditions, there is now little or no pinging. Am I imagining things here? I keep hearing "gas is gas". Could it be the fact that Unocal has no MTBE in their gasoline? Any of you 4runner owners out of California have a gas station you swear by? Or is gas really just gas???

if youre having gas issues, you should see a proctologist

I have to say that for me I also noticed that when I ran unocal 76 gas, it would not ping with just putting in 91 from 76 as opposed to chevron or shell. Since I figured this out, I found a 76 station not too far from my house that sells 100 octane unleaded. This is now my only place to fuel up.

Damn, what does 100 octane in California cost per gallon?

A couple of Winters ago my supercharged 96 developed a HG/LR-Ping that it really never had before. It was awful. I was using Exxon gas. I got a tank of Amoco and it suddenly went away. Next tank was Exxon and it pinged like crazy again. I stopped buying Exxon until Spring hit. The same thing has not happened since that Winter. Odd...

Roll Me Over
I always pick up pinging w/ winter blend gas. I usually just retard the timing a little more to compensate, BUT I'm now experiencing a higher rate of plug fouling.

that 100 Octan fuel costs about $4.30 a galon at last time I used. I use that 100 octan as 50% with 91, my non-SC ran so smooth. Now 91 octan at that 76 staion costs almost $2.30 and the 100 octan is still around $4.5 a galon. I think $4.5/gal is not too bad for an SC going to off road sometimes.
The 76 is at Almaden Expressway and FoxWorthy in San Jose, CA near Capitol ExpressWay. Let check that one out , your SC will love that blue fuel.

Wow. $4.30*16 gallons (approx) = $68.80 per fill up. There is definitely no way I could afford to put that stuff in my rig!
