If it's EFI, it's got an igniter... The only exception might be an early Celica, which had EFI but a vac advance distributor. Have a photo of your engine bay?


It's possible to fire the coil directly if you've got a non-EFI vehicle, yes.
If you've got an EFI vehicle, you'd need both - you need to provide the ECU information about RPM and timing (via the ignitor). If you left the ignitor in there, I suppose you could patch in another type of ignition system - such as a mechanical system with vac advance. I wouldn't recommend it unless you understand what you're doing.
