beware of thiefs in the san fernando valley cutting out catalytic converters. I went to start my 4 runner and instantly knew something was up with my exhaust. I took a look underneath and to my shock and dismay my catalytic converter was GONE! I called the police and while this is not commonly reported it is known that toyota trucks are a target.

Can't they just go buy one? Why buy when it's "free". I had a wiper motor stolen out of an old Camaro in an apt. parking lot, on a rainy day. Bastards.

Getting the Wheeling Fever

They are stealing them to take to the scrapyard there is some kind of metal in them that they get money for. They just had news story about this in Mobile, AL. The thieves pull up in big parking lots at night with a battery powered sawzall and go to hacking. The same thing goes for copper in air conditioners they're hacking those up to. There was another news story about some guy that went into a vacant house to steal the wire but the power was still on and fried him up, I don't know if he died because I missed it from laughing to hard.

I know someone who's been into junking cars lately the past couple years and he can get about 100 dollars apiece depending on size for cat's because of the buildup inside.. i guess people make jewelry out of it or something. Apparently it's pretty valuable

Anyone want the old one off my 22RE? I'm replacing it with something larger.. :-) Interesting: Scrap catalytic converters contain some of the most expensive metals on earth - metals which NEVER wear out, even if the converter stops working and must be junked! Nearly every vehicle sold in the US and Canada since 1975 is literally a "platinum mine" on wheels which can eventually be recycled. Thousands of converters are replaced daily (Ford once announced the recall of 680,000 converters - all of which became available as scrap!) and tens of thousands of cars are going to junk yards with their precious, platinum-loaded converters intact.

cats are made with ceramic that has platinum and rhodium powder in it. You can melt them and get the platinum separated form the ceramics. Platinum catalyzes the smog out of the exhaust when it gets hot. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/catalytic-converter2.htm

That's funny, cuz now NAPA puts a small core charge on them; I remember when that wasn't the case.
I snag steel and copper when I can. Also aluminum cans are going for 45ct/lb. This ain't a 'nickel-dime' redeeming state. Was 28ct/lb about 14 months ago.
