If you really think the lifter is completely flat, i.e. not adding any hydraulic adjustment to the system, be very careful at how tight you snug down that rocker. You could end up with a situation where that valve never closes and you will burn up the valve real quickly. I am not sure how to test if there is any adjustment left in the lifter though, but if it is completely flat, then it will essentially function like a solid lifter, which every solid lifter has a little gap in the system to allow for thermals. Glad to hear you found the root cause of your oil problems.

when i said the slack is gone i exagerated a bit. i can still wiggle the rocker a tiny bit when the valve is in the closed position, but its close enough to get rid of the pecking sound.

Glad you got the problems fixed. I assume that you no longer have any problems with oil leaking from the oil filter O-ring?

new development. my high oil pressure has returned. not blowing any seals this time though. the gauge reads 80 at idle and pegged while running. if i shut the engine off and immediatly turn the key back on the pressure reads 40 and drops one pound about every four of five seconds. i replaced sending unit and nothing changed. im going to put a manuel gage on it tommorrow and see how it reads. if it still reads high i dont know where to look for a problem.

Wow, what a thourghly informative read this post has been. I feel like im back in a high school mech class I took years ago. Save for the fact that this was much more insightful and learned a bit more. Thanks so much.
