Yeah I can see that. But what stops you from using a 3500lb winch with a block and tackle? That doubles the output and if since you will have either a tow strap or the like handy the distance whouldn't be a big deal either.
I am only pushing the issue because I would like a winch but can't see forking over $300-1000 when I can get away with $150-200.

Very good point...speed I guess? If you have to use pullies to multiply leverage, you trade speed for force (or is it power..or work...forgetting basic physics here).
