Are you kidding? rarely is a suitable winch anchor 25' in front of my vehicle (and I live in the wooded east)

Heh..I had to scoot a shed I'm building about 2" (made it parallel to the fence, which turned out to be un-parallel to the house)...I was wishing hard for a Pull Pal since the huge oak in my yard was out of reach of the 50' of 3/16 wire rope I had. The $16 Harbor Freight come-along worked great though, not sure if I'd trust their winches.

Speaking of winches, does anybody make a winch that doesn't weigh 400 pounds?? I hate the idea of putting all that weight on the nose of the vehicle.

Obviously synthetic winch rope goes a ways toward reducing the weight of the system, but they are still dang heavy.

buy some good tow straps and always wheel with another rig until you can afford a good winch. don't skimp on the things that are there to save your

yes you may have a short pull, but it may be a pull like this:

i wouldn't go cheap. i too have thought - what if i had even two of these ATV winchs going at the same time? they're sooooo cheap!

still didn't do it. i'd follow the advice. i am waiting to buy a 9000 lb'er.

My Trooper 89 RS swb 2 door is 3700 pounds and the 90 4 door Trooper weighs in at 4300.

I have a Harbor Freight 8000k winch, reliable enough over last 3 years. But it is very slow. If you can afford it get a winch with a W on it.

There is a Warn designed for lightweight applications. All I know is its silver, tiny and light weight, but supposedly a decent 8k winch. Popular for a comp buggys.

Steve, if all you are finding is 400# winches over there in MN, you need to start shoping somewhere other than the industrial rigging store.

The Warn winches I took a quick look at were all sub 100#. Not light, far from 400#.

Alrighty Captain Literal, that there was what is known as "exaggeration for effect" ...of course they aren't 400 pounds. But they are dang heavy, and winches don't get mounted in a good place for that weight, plus the weight of a winch bumper/bullbar.

They need to make 'em out of plastic or something...

Just giving you a hard time, Steve.

You know, you could mount it in the passenger seat. Better weight distribution, keeps it dry/clean, easy access, but the actual implementation of it would be problematic. Especially if the seat belt failed.

There is always the option of using a removable mount. Not light to lug about, but it can be stored inside the vehicle in a better place for weight distribution.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I bought a 8k winch from Harbor Freight. The speed does look slow compared to more expensive ones. But it should be more than strong enough and alot faster than Hi-lift winching.
