Have you thought of 2 or 3 small fans, giving you the room you need in the middle of the radiator for the waterpump?

I purchased the Spal controller seperately and I highly reccommend it even though it is not the cheepest around, but it lets you use the stock temp sensor for the computer and you get to set the temprature for the fan to come on first at 50% and then the upper temp for 100%. The A/C sensor input runs the fan at 100%. I believe you could put a switch in the ignition sens lead to turn the fan off for water crossing.
There is a noticable improvement in power in warm conditions when the OEM fan is engaged a lot.
There has also been about a 12% improvement in fuel economy.

I just went out an looked and the Procomp fan is almost flush with the shroud and with careful mounting it could be just flush with the engine side of the shroud. The electric is the way to go if you can.
The new fan assembly I will sell the new fan for $50.00 plus shipping. The used fan has a lot of miles on it and I think is in the early stages of failure.

when i put on my electric fan the stock fan had cracks at the base of all fan blades,and would have blown up soon for sure. so i wouldnt bother with the factory fan even if you get one for free. just gonna give you problems later. plus so many advantages to the elect. fan. that spal controller looks cool, i may look into that. i got a temp switch from summit,hooked it to my own relay.now i need a manual on for sitting idle with air on,and manual off for deep water. at first a switch and relay was all i had,almost melted engine a few times. once i had engine temp gauge pegged..yes pegged..all the way.

well, went for a test run today with the PATCHED rad and the Geo Metro fan sorta temporarlily installed... never had to turn the fan on once. this was with the kia fully loaded and towing a trailer. the patch on the rad held and once it warmed up it never got over the normal mark on the gauge. guess i'll just run it like this for a while and when it starts to warm up we'll see what the metro fan can handle.

Airdale are you happy with the Spal fan controller? I just bought one for myself  I will probably install it next weekend.

I really admired this post. I was totally in awe of the info and photos display. Many kudos for the time taken to show such ideas of works and scholership! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> I am still trying to work up the courage to attempt this project....but there are a few questions yet remaining... First of all, were the wiring instructions incuded? Second, why and what could happen when u removed the A.C. fan (and was that needed)? Third, What aux./belt did u get (model #)? And lastly, How easy was this from a scale of 1-10? Thanks. I love the fuel saving and horse power issue! Where do we get the L-Brackets? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Just do a search for SPAL FAN-PWM on yahoo and you can find them. I saw one for as low as $60 + shipping. Their on ebay too. Don't know what the price is there. Seem like the best set up. Personally, I left my AC fan on and used the ProComp 16" and everything seems to work great. I'm using a different controller, but I may get the SPAL after Christmas. I will answer several questions.
1. I am very happy with the spal controller.
2. The instructions are included with the controller.
3. The OEM-A/C fan I feel is not needed because when you connect the new fan and Spal controller and connect the A/X-sens lead, the new fan runs at 100% and moves more air than the OEM-A/C fan could.
4. The Spal controller allows you to use the OEM OBDII sensor as the Spal's sensor, so you do not need to purchase a seperate sensor.
5. The installation is not easy but if you do a thoughtful and neat installation it is not difficult. Make sure all your connections are good electrical and mechanical connections and are weather tight. Properly fuse the where needed.
6. The new shorter alternator belt I used is a Gates K040330, which is a 14mm x 855mm Micro-V belt. This is probably as short a belt as you want to use.
7. I manufactured the "L" brackets my self. You will need som flat stock and basic tools to make the brackets.
8. You can probably see in the pictures I routed the wiring harness across the fan shroud and attached it to the insice lip of the shroud with zip-ties through holes I drilled in the shroud. All of the wires that were included with the Spal were long enough. You can see my + battery connection at the + battery post, I made the ground connection at the ground connection on the battery tray.
