Getting the Wheeling Fever
i might be in the market for a new engine for my jeep. if i do replace the engine i would at least like to explore the possibility of upgrading to a v8. does anyone know what engines will bolt up to my 904 automatic tranny?

thanks

IF it has the 258 bolt pattern the usual AMC engines will fit. 304 or 360 V8s among others (I doubt if you want bigger than a 360 but they're out there). A 360 Chrysler Jeep engine will not fit. Chrysler did use the AMC 360 blocks for a while though I know the 91 Grand Wagoneer still used the AMC 360. Not that it matters but the AMC 4 cyls use a GM bolt pattern and won't fit. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

My CJ7 has an AMC 360 V8 bolted to the TF999 tranny - not stock, but works good. D300 T-case on the other end.

1977 CJ-7, fiberglass body, AMC 360 w/ headers, DUI ignition, Edelbrock intake and Holley 4150 carb, TF999, Dana 300, 4.56 gears lockers, York air comp, 4" susp lift, 2" body lift, BFG 35" M-T tires, Megashifter, AGR pump & box, REP8000 winch.

I just swapped in a 304 into my 84 CJ7 in place of the 258. A couple of things you will need will be specific V8 motor mounts and buy a flexplate for a V8. I believe you can use the same plate for both the 304 and 360. 258,s are neutral balanced and the AMC V8,s are externally balanced by the flexplate. Also the V8,s generate more heat so you might want to get a 3 core or better rad.

84 CJ7 304 HEI 35 BFG,s rear dana 60 with detroit locker,Viar compressor, fibreglass body, 2 1/2 spring lift, TF999auto, Warn 8000 winch, Plus a cool little trailer on 35,s. JEEP stands for just empty every pocket

Yes it will fit under the hood.. BUT you will need to fabricate mounts and an adapter plate from ADVANCE ADAPTERS.
The AMC engines would be far easier to install.
