Hey, my 87 raider 2.6 needs a new timming chian. I would like to install a BSE kit, Can this be done at the same time? Or does the engine need to come out?

it can be done at the same time.make sure the you are at top dead center before you tear down.also the repair book says to line up marks on the bs chain but if you do the bse then it dont matter just make sure to put the smaller chain on and the oil block off ring for the upper bs spot.i have done 4 of these it is pretty easy if you have ever done a timing chain before

I've had my balance shaft elimination kit in for about 45,000 or so. It was very easy to install (included illustrated instructions). After it was in I couldn't tell ANY increased vibration BUT I had just rebuilt the engine, and the pistons and rods were carefully balanced before installation. I don't know what effect it would have on an engine where the pistons/rods weren't balanced.

But in my case, I've had no vibration related issues since install.

My turbo engine with the BSE definetly has some vibration, I don't mind it however. It just makes me feel happier to feel the engine in the shifter when you're tearing through the gears. I did put new motor mounts in though, so that might make it a bit more rigid.

There are like 2 points in the RPM Range that have vibration issues, otherwise it's just fine untill you are slowly cruising along through town and hit the one spot where it makes the junk rattle off your dashboard.. but other than that, it's liveable. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

when I got my 2.6 rebuilt 2 years ago in my 88 D-50 I had the BSE kit installed and my engine rebuilder told me he had done tons of these and never needed balancing. So when I started driving it the vibrations were so bad that it rattled 2 of my oil pan bolts loose. And at Idle my signal/wiper switches would rattle and made noises, the change in my ashtray would rattle. it was hell. so when that engine died 4000km later (not BSE related) I had him balance it on my warranty rebuild. he had installed 1983-86 pistons with 87-89 rings. you wouldn't think it would make a difference but it broke every piston ring into pieces.

I don't like it without them. Too buzzy and fuzzy in the rearview. I also had to weld up the p/s pump bracket about 5 times, and the original aluminum a/c compressor bracket came out of the truck in 5 pieces. My next 2.6 rebuild gets it's balance shafts back.

A note. Balancing the rotating components will not eliminate the rocking shake that is inherent in I4's, and expecially in big I4's like the 2.6 with it's long stroke. It will eliminate the vibration from unmatched components, but not the second order effect of the second order shaking force (real engineers, did I get it right this time?), which will be present even if you balance the enigne to the microgram. This 2nd 2nd effect has to be offset by countervibrations timed to cancel the inherent effect, provided by the eccentric b/s's spinning at twice engine speed.

i have never had a vibration problem.
