I havent really ran my truck since i got it all buttoned up but i couldn't remember when to re-torque the head bolts, was it after you let it get to operating temp and then do it hot?

*You're safest bet is to follow the maufacturers guidlines. For example FELPRO puts no re-torqueing required in big letters on their packaging, while Engnbldr suggests its done with his graphite headgasket. I do it myself...right after I get the engine up to operating temperature and just prior to re-adjusting the valves after a top end rebuild. Then do a double check at the first oil change and have yet to have a gasket related failure since doing it this way. Just follow the torque sequence that you used when re-installing the head, and that all bolts are evenly torqued. darin's smart

You definitely should. I found out the hard way...You gotta have the cover off to do the valves anyhow.

Do NOT re-torque a hot (or even warm) head, unless you like your head cracked.
The procedure I use is to fully warm the motor up to operating temp, to the point where the T-stat opens, and then beyond that until it reaches standard operating temp. Then shut it off and allow it to cool *completely*, like overnight. Once it is COMPLETELY COLD TO THE TOUCH, re-torque the head bolts/studs in order, to the proper spec. I have also heard the recommendation to very slightly increase the load on re-torque by 1-2 ft. lbs. so you are sure you are getting enough "bite".
Do this again after 500 miles, and you should be good to go for a long time.

Do your follow up when the engine is stone cold! as in over night.

Is it necessary to torque the head bolts after 500 miles of a rebuild? Just curious?
