Another spot to look is the carrier bearing. The 2 piece drive shaft is cradled in the middle at the u-joint by a rubber suspended bearing. These things are right out in the slop when you are driving and make one heck of a growl when dried out. Most factory carrier bearings are not provided with a grease joint so they eventually dry out the factory lube and go to pot.
My bet would be the carrier bearing.. This was my original suspicion because I can move the driveshaft a good bit in any direction when I push on it but that doesn't really have anything to do with the bearing itself, just the rubber. I'll give this a listen tonight when I've got it jacked up and spinning to see if I can discern any noise or excessive movement.

it will move a bit, i made the mistake of replacing the support bearing, didnt need to, ended up being the wheel bearing...

That's why I hesitated to pull the trigger on a $110 part that may or may not solve my problem.

I just want to pipe in with another supportive opinion leaning toward the wheel bearing. They make a pretty discouraging growling noise tht gets worse over time. I was shocked at how much quieter things were after replacing that bearing.

Did not realize the wheel bearings are sealed. Thanks for guys like Eric. But the test still is valid. Loading one side and then the other to see if noise is increased is the simplest test for them, gear lubed or not.

Ridiculously late follow up. The rear wheel bearings appear to be fine. I changed the rearmost u-joint and it cured the growling noise. I do still have a strange wobbling sound coming from the driveline but it comes and goes, its not steady like the growling sound was. I'm going to change that center support bearing and go from there. I just need to get around to ordering it.

I too have an odd wobble in the driveline that comes & goes... Been struggling to figure out what the hell it is for forever; keep chasing it from front to back, side to side - never consistent enough to determine... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />

Take your driveline in to be balanced, or find a mechanic who can check the runout.
I wallowed out one of my older Toys a few years back; rebuilt the pumpkin. 4 months later, came back, WTH? Friend of mine had a runout gauge; found that at some point I had bent the D/L. Took it into a D/L shop; got it balanced; has been okay since.
If ya got any lift, double check yer angles.

I have a 95 T100 4x4 xtracab and have all these problems. It has been cold here in Cincinnati and in the morning when I first take off I get the growling - vibration for the first mile or so then it goes away. It seems to be worse when turning right. It never does this after a mile or so. I also have the come and go shakes on the highway. I am not a mechanic so this truck is driving me nuts & to the poor house. Does anyone know what a 95 T with 146,000 on it is worth?
