I looked at autozone real quick, and they have a head for $587.99 with a $125.00 core price.. if you gave them the old one that would be like $465.00 or something if I understand the core thing right.. you might be able to look around at a junkyard, and find one cheaper.. hope that helps, Matt

Nope. That is $587.99 for the head and $125 if you do not provide a rebuildable core.
Realistically, if your head is serviceable, it should cost you in the neighborhood of $250-$300 for someone to go through it for you.
There are new, aftermarket castings available for $500-$550, I think. Everyone I know of who has used one has been happy.
Good Luck, Michael

I recently replaced a cracked head on my 2.6 Trooper. I bought an AMC head from Aluminum Head Rebuildersin Portland. Its a brand new head, not a rebuilt one. The cost was $500, +/-, with a $95 core charge. It seems like a good unit so far. It started right up, no problem, when I had it all back together. I'm still working on the smog stuff.

Call Dover Cylinder Heads in Atlanta at 404-768-1825 That's where I got he head for the Mazda. It was $350. I would expect the Isuzu to be more though.
Don't forget the cost of the head gasket set too.. +/- $150.

Could one from a junkyard be trusted? This might be a dumb question, but is there an easy way to tell if the head is bad. Like to check one at a junkyard, could you tell if it's busted or not? If I could get a cylinder head at the junkyard and the gasket set at Advance Auto, what would yall say that would cost? By the way, thanks for stoping by autozone. I checked Advance and the only one they can get is like $627. So I cac't do that. I appreciate all the help.

You will need to get any head you buy, unless it is new or already rebuilt, to be inspected. This consists of taking it to a machinist and having them check it for cracks and most likely surfacing it.
You can swap a used head without doing this, but you run the risk of having to do it again and you will be out at the least, the cost of the gasket set.
That said, please read above. Walking into a machine shop with a head (regardless of where you got it) will cost you in the neighborhood of $300 or so for them to look at it, clean it, surface it, and work on the valves. This price will vary depending upon your location.
For a little bit more and a better head, you can go with the AMC head that is a non-Isuzu casting and it a much better product (IMHO). This will cost you about $500 plus gaskets and other bits and pieces.
In general, you are not going to get out of fixing this vehicle for under about $400 dollars. You may not even need to replace the head. It may just need to be resurfaced, inspected and reinstalled with a new gasket.
Good Luck, Michael

Alright. Thanks. I might buy it and park it somewhere till I can get $$$ for parts. You know, fix it as the money comes in.

That is not a bad idea.
Another idea is to just pass on this one. There will always be other vehicles. For the $800-1000 this one is going to cost you to get on the road, you might find one for that amount that does not need a bunch of work and might even have a 5-speed in it (from your other post).
Isuzu made a lot of Troopers. I promise this is not the last one.

Good idea. Plus, I think Cyborg_squirrel out bid me. Oh well. Thanks for saying that, cause I was gonna go crazy trying to find a way to get it. Cyborg offered $300 and the owner and I were talking and I was thinking $200. Oh well. I guess waiting would be a good idea, since at this point I don't have a job and I'm most likely moving down to GA anyways. So after I move I can get a job and start saving so that when another opp. comes up, I'll be ready. Plus, to be honest, I want a Toyota Taco anyways. Nothing against Isuzu's, just tend to trust the Tacos more. Them or a jeep, cause parts are unlimited!
Adios. Minds still not made up yet. I'm just praying about it. I will pray that if God has better, then to let this one slip.
In Christ, Andrew
