Getting the Wheeling Fever
94 4-Runner 3.0L Idles high 1200RPM, drops a little after it gets warmed up around 1000RPM. How do I adjust this? Is it possible there's a mechanical problem? What is the normal idle RPM? Thanks Bob

High idle when cold is normal. This is controlled by your IAC, idle air control valve. After warmed up, it should drop down to normal idle, which for your truck is 800rpm.

Your idle adjustment screw is on the top of your throttle body.

If you still have high idle problems, it could be a vacuum leak, PCV plugged, or a few other things.

Where would the PCV be located on this unit? I thought maybe on the hose from the air intake to the valve cover, but I looked at it & it seems to be just a plastic elbow. Is it hidden some where? Thanks

On the passenger side valve cover, under the intake plenum. Look at the plenum, you'll see 3 little vacuum lines going into 1 plug, directly below that is a larger vacuum line, that is the PCV line. I've heard of people being able to pull the PCV out with a pair of pliers, but the only way I could get mine out was to pull the intake plenum.

As mentioned a number of things can cause erratic idle speed... with the throttle position switch being at the top of the list...

If the TPS idle position contacts do not go closed (due to mis adjustment, wear, or dirt inside the throttle body) with the throttle all the way back to idle, the computer doesn't get that signal indicating that it should control the IAC to the correct position to get the proper idle speed..

There are tons of posts on TPS problems.. First thing you'd want to do is clean the throttle body per this article..

Looks ez enough. I'll give that a try. I had that intake hose off while changing spark plugs & noticed about 4oz. of black oil leaked out of it when I set it down. what would that be from? It must be coming from the crankcase. Thanks

Probably PCV valve clogged.

I cleaned the throttle body per article & replaced the PCV valve. Still have high idle. With the cooler outside temps now, it starts at 1500RPM & drops to about 1200RPM after about 10 minutes running. Did a visual on the vac hoses didn't see any problems. Is there something else I can try? Where are the idle posistion contacts? Thanks

Idle Air Control valve possibly. Assuming you did adjust the idle screw.
