I have an 88 4Runner IFS. I just noticed the drivers side inboard boot is cut. I've seen a write up on replacing these but I can not find it. The write up included a mod so next time the hub doesn't have to be removed. I've been searching for about a half-hour now and can find it. I happen to have a used shaft hande thanks to a buddy who did a SAS.
Anyone have a link. Thanks in advance!

I need the write up on replacing the shaft. The FSM is pretty limited on what it shows and discribes. Thanks again.

it's pretty simple really. Only unbolt what you need, and tighten everything in opposite order. 10 steps for ya!

1)B4 jacking up, stick a 2" thick wood btwn upper bumpstop & UCA to limited down compression (It's easier for me)

2)Jack up and take wheel off

3)undo the big nut of lower BJ from LCA (bj puller)

4)Unbolt manual/auto/flange hub (Hammer and bottle jack small pipe technique. Search for cone-washer removal for more details)

5)Unbolt 12mm bolt & all the snap-rings from CV axle end (btwn the hub and bearing)

6)Undo all 6 bolts from CV inner axle studs. (Mod: You can replace studs with bolts as suggest in link above)

7)Unbolt the huge bearings nut/washer/nut/outer-race/bearing

8)Pull knuckle out/upward by hand for CV axle to slide out from the hole of the knuckle.

9)Pull the whole CV and replace with a new one

10)You are half way done, now put everything back together in reverse order. (Remember to check bearing nuts adjustment, bearing grease, lock-tight, silicon on hub flange, and torque everything.)

Do I need to remove the hub cover in order to remove the hub body?
The heads on the allen bolts are stripped. I've gotten 3 of them off but the others are stripped. So I cant get the cover off. Can I just take the entire hub off with the 6 nuts?

With manual hub, you'll have either a c-clip or bolt holding the end of the axle shaft inside the locking hub. Cover needs to come off to remove that fastener.

Woops the answer is yes...isn't it? Any Ideas?

This is an '88 with Automatic locking hubs. Not sure if that makes a difference.
Thanks again!
