Well first, I made a mistake about what size tire I currently have, they are 265/75-16, about 32". when I sold myself the Montero in 2003 we had installed 285/75-16 on 3 of them for the showroom, moved the 265's to Montero Sports, they just look better.
I found out after I bought it that the MPG sucks with 285's like 15mpg hwy, so when they started to make noise, I went to the 265/75's.
Also the 285's would rub on the front at full compression, like when going down into a roller coaster typ dip on the highway, at the bottom, it would rub the fender liner. The liner is actually quite flimsey, on a hot day it will droop and touch them sooner. I never had the 285's seriously rub when off-roading. The 265's work well with the 75 aspect ratio, way better than the 265/70's that were on my 2002. The 285's, believe it or not made the Montero handle better on twisty roads, and deffinetly in the dirt.
I am for sure going to be running 285 or larger in the future. BFG MT's, had good luck with them on my 1990 Might Max.
Discount Tire has a 16x8 alloy wheel with 25mm offset that will work on the montero, I am considering getting a set with MT's for when I go out, and keep the stockers with AT's for everyday use.
Do you think 315/75-16's (34.5") BFG MT's would be cool?
I have done many strut spring swaps on passenger cars, and did all the work on my old MM, but the factory manual say to remover the upper front control arm to access the front struts? Is that really neccesary?
This is GREAT! All these poeple with GEN3's actually working on them and maybe... taking them in the dirt?
