Hi, I'm back from the dead.

The Trooper has 263,000 miles on it and is still going strong. For, oh, maybe the last 50k miles or so I've had this odd "hooting" noise coming from the back end. Sounds like the brakes but it's hard to tell. When I take a turn (sometimes) OR when I side-load the truck and roll it in the driveway, I get a sound that can only be described as an owl hooting. Lasts as long as the loading is present when it decides to do it.

The hubs seem solid in place (i.e. no lateral play) and a brake job seems to fix it for a short time (the 91 does have discs in rear). This is the OE corp axle with nothing more than a diff fluid change around 170k miles. No leaks.

Any ideas?

Todd-

You did not use OEM pads did you? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

That is what has be affectionately referred to as the "Isuzu Mating Call" and is usually caused by using aftermarket pads, shims ect. Yes, a brake job will fix it for a while. Anti-squeal, anti-seize and all that goop will help for a bit, but in the end it always returns.

The good news is it is doing no damage, except for the embarrassment you feel driving through a parking lot.

Good Luck,
Michael

It's really that easy?

I honestly can't remember- they have been on there for a good 60k miles. I may just go get some OEM ones and replace them. OEM ones will fix them? Do they come with the shims, etc., or do I need to get those seperately?

Thanks!!!

The last set I bought came with pads, shims, and the goop for between the pads and shims and the goop for the pins. That was for the front, but I assume the rear would be the same.

My old gasser '88 Troop does this, too, but only in reverse and only when cold. I kind of like it (always knew it was brakes) - not as cool as the bad front ball joints in terms of sound, though. Used to bray like a donkey when the two were in concert.

Mine is looking for a mate too. It's done it ever since my grandpa bought it in 1989-90. My truck, even with "oem" pads has still done it. I've just gotten used to it. At least with the noise I know there is still pad material left ::chuckle::.

Body Damage is Cool
THESE PADS ARE THE CORRECT , NON HOOTER CALLING ,IF INSTALLED WITH EVERYTHING NICE AND CLEAN THEY SHOULD BE GOOD FOR A LOOOOONG TIME 897049-4300 THESE ARE NON ASBESTOS,

THE STANDARD PAD 897018-3570 MAY OR MAY NOT GROAN A BIT DEPENDING ON THE SURFACE PREP OF THE ROTOR AND THE CALIPER GUIDES BEING NICE AND CLEAN AND LUBED CORRECTLY , THESE WILL LAST THE LONGEST BUT NEED MORE ATTENTION TO THE MAINTENANCE OF THE SMALL PARTS .. JERRY

Thanks, Jerry, and everyone else, for the help!!! I'll try the "better" pads and also do the full lube. I know I have a torn dust boot back there, but no problems with the braking systen other than the noise... yet. I'll see if I can get a new seal & do a bleed while I'm back there.

She just turned over 264,000 miles this morning! Those are the OEM rear calipers, never rebuilt...
