Getting the Wheeling Fever

I'm going to be pulling my tranny soon to replace a broken flexplate,and I was wondering if I can pull the transfer case & tranny separately,or do they have to be pulled together as a unit? It would make things lighter,however,if I'm opening another can of worms by separating the tranny/transfer,then I won't do it..Anybody do it that way? The tranny is a 4L30E,by the way.... TIA...John
