I didn't see on the SF website where it said the U2 output varies from 80-100 lumens. I doubt you'll get a bad LED from SF. Luxeon categorizes their LEDs into Bins according to color and output quality. I think SF would only get the best.

I read that the same LEDs can vary in actual output in a seperate article, due to variences in manufacturing or something like that. But if you look at the SF website, they list it as 80Lums, but on any package, it's listed as 100 lums. I've also heard that Surefire might have a policy of underrating their lights, which seems kind of strange. So, the old packaging might read 100, but the website and new packaging will read 80.

Today, I exchanged my Glock incandesant weapon light for a Surefire X200A, that I got a pretty good deal on. Once I learned that the Surefire light will still put out light, even if at a lower rate long after the Glock light goes dead, I knew I had to dump the Glock light for an LED and Surefire makes the best weaponlights. This one is only 3watt, 60 lums rated, but I'm happy with it.

I don't think I'll ever buy an incandesent flashlight ever again.

It never ceases to amaze me how much nerdiness us 4wheelers have in common... My non-wheeling friends always roll their eyes at my "toys", and how seriously I research something before buying... but my wheeling friends, amongst whom I count you guys, are guaranteed to have trumped my geekiness in any area, such as flashlights.

Many thanks to all of you for the recommendations and the wealth of tech info - this really surpassed my expectations! I haven't decided which one I'll get yet, I need to review all of this some more then start shopping.

I carry a surefire and a 20 million candlepower. But then again I'm what one would call a late nite hunter

OK- so I had ordered 2 of the LED drop ins for my maglights from Nite-Ize. I have 3 mags, and decided to check out the flashlights at Target, and saw they had them there, so I picked up a third.

To say the least, I'm dissapointed. Sure, its a bright white light, but it is nowhere near as bright as the standard Krypton bulb, IMO.

In my grandmothers holler, with no street lights for miles, I put both side by side. The standard bulb was brighter, mopre focused and had better flood or peripheral coverage than the LED.

So, now I have two in box LED's, and will probably send them back.

Personally, I think your problem *might* be the brand of bulb. I looked at those too and compared to the actual mag-lite brand led replacement bulb, the nite-ize looked CHEAP in comparison. I spent the extra $10 and opted for the mag-lite led bulbs. While I haven't been able to take it out into the pitch black yet, I have been pleased with the output where I've used it.

Yeh- I was thinking either that, or my batteries are about 2 years old in that light.

Ya ... while LEDs do better than incandescents on lower power sources, they still work better with fresh batteries. Try some new batteries and see what it's like. I bet it's better. But it's still probably a combination of the cheaper LED and old batteries.

Overall, I'd say avoid the Nite-Ize drop ins.

Its got to be the LED. I put fresh cells in both my 3 and 4 D Mags, and the light wasn't that good.

It did however keep me from stepping on 'landmines' while walking the dog.

I'll probably keep it in cap, for a backup if the batteries start to die while I use it.
