Still not getting power from my '89 22RE pickup. The engine seems like the timing is retarded when on hills or under load. New air filter and spark plugs were recenty done. I checked the cat (twice!) which was fine and checked the fuel pressure which was fine. The truck threw a code which indicated the knock sensor.
Replaced it with a used one and still no power. Read some posts here about the unreliability of used knock sensor's so I purchased a new one. Sensor cable looks OK and reads voltage. Still no power under load with the new sensor.
Toyota recommends a new ECU when the knock sensor is replaced and the problem still exists. I don't really want to spend any $$ on a new ECU if it could be something else. ECU looks fine inside...no meltdowns or burn marks.
Truck idles fine and runs ok on a flat road or down hills. Not a Cal. truck and no mods...
Any thoughts or recommendations? Anyone got a used ECU (non-California)for an '89 pickup they wish to part with?
Thanks.

This started several weeks ago and I (and a mechanic) haven't been able to clearly diagnose the problem.
I'm now thinking, as previous replies have suggested, maybe to take a look at the TPS. I'll have to search on how to diagnose it. Although it idles fine and revs fine without a load...hmmm <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
Your case may be the ignition coil. I've had coils act that way in damp weather.

Is this a common problem with the early Toyota's that is...not solvable??
Maybe it's a cold weather phenomenom that the more northerly members experience? Any ideas out there??

Thanks. Could it be related to the spark plugs? No engine codes?

Regarding cold weather problems...cold temperatures will exaggerate any electrical problems such as worn wires and too-thin casing by reducing resistance. If a bare wire is in close proximimity to another metal object, it will be easier for it to arc and ground out. Just a thought, but I had similar problems with my ignitor wiring only when it was cold.

Boy seems like this could be so many things. Clogged injectors possibly, TPS could be out of adjustment, have you checked the timing and adjusted the valves? Also you could potentially have a vacuum leak somewhere that is robbing you some power. I would check all the hoses and see if there is a vac leak anywhere, then adjust the valves, then check/set the timing. I like to advance mine a little bit more that the 5deg factory setting..like 8 or 10deg.

There's lot to change like spark plugs, wires,a good tune-up,oil change etc...My 86 truck acted up after doing all that so I figured changing my IGNITOR BOX and that did the fix for my truck.I started collecting more for my other trucks...They are expensive from OEM...So far my truck is running fine as my daily drive...

Ok let's see where to start...1989 22re 4x4 truck ran great and then just started having little to no power especially on hills.
Recent tuneup with new plugs and wires, oil change w/filter, air filter, induction service, tested vac lines and fuel pressure, new fuel filter and coil(6 months/3,000 miles ago)
Throws a code for the knock sensor which was replaced with a new OEM. KS cable to ECU tests OK, and ECU looks OK inside (no burns etc...)
Truck idles fine and runs good except for loss of power and fuel consumption seems high. Revs fine in thwe driveway with no load. Just no power under load.
Don't know where else to look.
