What is up with these things? This is the 3rd one I'm having to put in since May 2006. Is this a common occurrence? Is there something I can do to prevent having to shell out $100 every 3 months?

Thanks!

Well, if you are replacing them for $100 each time, it sounds
like you are using an aftermarket local parts store re-manufactured units.
If that is the case, there is a reason that the parts store
reman's are $100 and the factory replacements are a couple of hundred bucks.

I think your grip is probably with the el-cheapo reman's
that the parts stores sell.

Spend a little extra money, buy a factory alternator or
a quality aftermarket alternator and you probably
will greatly increase the MTBF.

All that is providing your electrical system is in good shape and has no problems.
