I do not put the amount of grease that the FSM calls for. I pack the Birfs by filling the center hole where the axle goes and shoving the short side axle in, I keep repeating this until the grease is pushing out all the way around on the outside of the cage where the balls. I then wipe a thin coating of grease on the outside of the bell on the Birf and the axle shaft to lube the bronze bushing in the spindle and on the inside of the bell on the axle housing Before I put the knuckle on I pack the trunion bearings real good.

Why do I not put the amount of grease the FSM calls for, that is how to service them for 50-100 thousand miles. I am into my axle a couple of times a year and if you every blow a Birf on the trail it is a huge mess.
