The propane tanks over here have little gauges on the tanks themselves. You can also get cab mounted gauges or have the propane tank wired up to your fuel gauge.

From what I hear, propane isn't as popular in the states as it is over here in Oz. My wifes DD is a 1989 Ford Fairlane on propane (we call it LPG or just gas over here). My DD is a 1991 Ford Falcon (no LPG) with the same motor etc and it's roughly twice the price to run around in than the fairlane. Propane over here atm is around 55 cents a litre compared to $1.30 a litre for petrol. Theres no power loss on propane compared to just straight fuel that we can notice between the 2.

So we get the luxury/space of a large 6 cylinder car that costs around the same as a 4cyl to drive around in.
