Can somebody, anybody give me some ideas on how to get my pilot bearing out. I attempted to try my pilot bearing out all day yesterday. I went through 2 pullers from Schucks yesterday. It did nothing but bent the fingers. We read the instructions for this specific pilot bearing remver to a "T" and yet the fingers kept slipping out. I saw that autozone has a different type of a puller. The only other method that I know of, and a last resort, would be to use the hydralic method, I am unsure how to properly do this as I have found no real set of instructions.
Any help would be appreaciated.

What I've done with mine in the past, is to take a cold chisel and bust it into smaller pieces and pick them out. Not necessarily the "preferred" method, but it works.

A good slide hammer set will usually come with an attachment for pilot bearing removal.
an old timer once told me this method: pack grease behind the bearing tighly, then use an object very close in size to push into the hole swiftly... jamming this in should force the grease to push out the bearing.

the only thing I can think of, would be to put some duct tape on the end of a socket and wrap teflon tape around it to create a good seal and attempt to drive it into the hole after packing real tight with grease. I can't think of anything else that would work any better.
I also want to add that the pilot bearing removal tool (power built) from the local Schucks store is crap, I paid $50 for it, it has aluminium teeth on it to grab the bearing, it started to bend under force and eventually cracked the aluminium. I think I am going to Autozone and getting a slide hammer, and some grease if that fails.

Another trick is to slip something into the space behind the jaws of the puller, once it is setup inside the bearing. A socket, bolt, whatever, will keep the teeth from slipping off the ID of bearing. Just be creative.
As for beating it out, well...save that till the last resort. This is a roller bearing, not a sintered oiled bronze bushing like on the 2.8.
Worst case, you are going to have to cut it out. A sawzall may work, but a hacksaw blade will fit through the center. Cut the inner race in two places, pull out the pieces. Cut the outer shell most of the way through in few spots and see if you can't beat it out with a chisel. Be careful not to damage the crank.

I used this tool along with a slide hammer. It took more than a few good hard hits before mine came out. I really can't see the grease thing working on one that took this much force. Not that it doesn't work, but it would take something very close in diameter. ![[Linked Image]](http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/6/web/762000-762999/762581_56_full.jpg) I can't see doing it any other way, seeing as these were rental (no charge) tools from the parts store. In the second picture there on the left you can see my sad attempt at making a puller that I was trying to tap it out with a hammer. Needless to say it didn't work. Joe

I once took one out of an RX-7 by using a die grinder to cut nearly through the pilot bearing, then using the cold chisel. Of course I have a Metalbo variable speed die grinder with a three-foot flex shaft and a tungsten rotary rasp from Boeing surplus.

Micheal is right. Use the the puller, but take a bolt and tighten it into the the two open sides. I've also put a nut between the arnms of the puller. This added reinforcement useually prevents the puller arms from slipping when younuse the slide hammer.

If you look at the third picture down, you can see the piece of metal that is forced down between the jaws of the puller to prevent the jaws from slipping.
I had no trouble using the "borrowed" one I tried.
