Getting the Wheeling Fever
Quote
A few weeks ago I ajusted the steering box.
after a few times driving it, it started doing this.
What could happen if it was ajusted too much???

I think you might have adjusted it to tight. There needs to be just under 1" of play in the steering wheel when moved from side to side before the tires move.
When you turn the adjusting screw, you are moving the pitman shaft up in relation to the case. The shaft has a beveled gear on it and you are moving his gear closer to complete mesh with the worm shaft. Complete mesh is what you don't want to happen. There needs to be some play between the two. HTH

Yeah thats what I was thinking too, but there was still alot of play in the steering. I only ajusted it maybe 1/2 turn. But I also ajusted it a few years ago...

Before adjusting the gearbox did you check all the steering linkages ie idler arm, idler relay arm, tie rod ends?
Just trying to determine if the adjustment was even needed in the gearbox in the first place. If you've only adjusted it one time it should not be maxed out.

Well it deffentily helped out alot. there was play in the box.

Its strange it has alittle bit of power steering.
you can tell its trying to work. I just don't know whats going on. I loosen'd the steering just to see if that would do anything, nope no different.

Well I worked on it again today.
I took off the return and held it over the reserviar, the pump is good and pumping. It pumps really well.

I found a new problem though. I started it up and it was working better, but after turning it off I noticed it was leaking.this is the first time Its leaked even after I had no power steering.
The strange thing is where its leaking. Its leaking from the ajustment bolt.
It loosens up. I turn the wheel to the right and the ajustment bolt loosens . no matter how tight I tighen it.

You did tighten the locknut back down, right? Hold the adjuster with the screwdriver and tighten the locknut on it.

Yeah thats the strange thing. everytime I turn it breaks the locknut loose. No matter how tight I put it on.

You guys are going to think I'm nuts!!!!!!!!!!

everything is good now. I messed around with the ajustment screw. I guess I had it all out of whack??
I tighened it up alittle more (1/2 turn), and now theres no problem. The lock nut says put.

I do think it was the pump. I guess It just needed to be primed more?
Talk about a strange few days

Thanks for all of the help guys. I hope it stays fine
