Getting the Wheeling Fever
Quote
My T100 has also had some problems starting during the past 6-7 months. When it is warm out and the truck has sat for a few hours in the afternoon sun it takes a lot longer while cranking to start.

I had two ideas about what is causing this. One, the fuel pump is not strong enough to build the pressure required for starting (something that happens to some toyotas per my instructor). Two, the fuel pressure regulator is faulty. My understanding of the pressure regulator is that it bleeds off pressure when the pressure is too high. I did not think that it maintained a minimum pressure.

Pressure regulator? Where is that located on a 3.4L? I saw no reference to in the the troubleshooting guide...

The fuel pressure regulator is located at the firewall end of the driver's side fuel rail. It somewhat resembles a round hat with a brim and will have a hose running straight down into it.

The FSM states:
If the fuel pressure is high, replace the fuel pressure regulator.
If the fuel pressure is low, check these parts:
- fuel hoses and connections
- fuel pump
- fuel filter
- fuel pressure regulator
- vacuum switching valve for fuel pressure control

It recommends removing the bolt in the driver's side fuel rail (in the front of engine) and connecting a fuel pressure gauge to check the fuel pressure at idle and after the engine is turned off.

It seems that the fuel pump may be getting weak after 10 years. I may hook up a fuel pressure gauge at work before I drop the tank and replace the fuel pump and sending unit.

Have you looked at the fuel rail where they recommend connecting a guage? Jeesh, I don't see how you could get one on there. There is about one inch clearance between the end of the rail where the plug bolt is and the fairng on the firewall. YOu would need a really thin banjo fitting to screw in there. Prolly some expensive Toyota tool made just for that. Same on passenger side.

Well you don't have much of a choice as all of the other unions between fuel lines are some thread, flare angle and configuration that you will NOT find in this country.

Here is the toyota test kit for fuel pressure: http://toyota.spx.com/detail.aspx?id=249 Once you get the plumbing you can use any fuel pressure gauge for efi (harbor freight?)

I just looked in the parts list for the truck, there is no information given there which will help identify the thread size of the banjo bolts that are in there.
