One way to tell is get underneath and look.

And to check the compnents, lift the front tires off the ground. Lock and unlock the front hubs and see if the CV shafts turn with the wheels w/ hubs locked. Then try the front shaft, should turn free in 2H and not turn in 4H or 4L, assuming a directly shifted t-case.
