I am new to the forum and my 1999 4runner is new to me.

I do not have a owners manual I am looking for general guidelines on use of the transmission. Particularly deployment of 4wd, when to use which range, at what maximum speed, etc.

Any advice appreciated.

Shifting into 4 hi in and out can be done at moderate speed. 4low you need to be stopped and I put mine into park.Is your a limited w/ locking rear dif?

Thanks,

It is a limited w/the locking rear diff.

The card in the visor indicates you can drive in 4WD hi up to 60, I have friends who say they would never go over 40 in 4WD.

What I am wondering is at moderately high speed on mixed surface (40 - 50 mph), should I just use the 4WD button on the side of the transfer case shifter as needed (sometimes it takes a minute or 2 to engage), or just stop and shift the transmission to 4hi until I am in the clear.

Thanks for your input.

They must have changed some stuff from 98 to 99 I dont have a "4wd button on the side of the transfer case shifter".The only time I have to stop is to engage 4low. I also stop to lock the rear diff. You should only use 4low or diff lock in off road situations. The rear diff lock is a button on the left of the wheel on the dash. Do you have a center diff lock?? I thought that was only on gen 4 4runners. Then you get into hill decent and all kinds of stuff I dont have.

I've tried this a couple of times while in motion; just plain ol' ADD front, no elocker.

Don't. Once that front end engages, you could break traction, ironically enough. ESP if on ice.

I usually wind up engaging mine once I get to town to have better control with the intersections, but I'm under 30 mph when I do this, OR, I simply pull over, put 'er in, and get back out there.

Follow your owner's manual.

Thanks for all of your responses.

I am ordering an owners manual.

re: the 4wd shift button, it is on the shifter of the transfer case. I plan on using the locking diff in case of emergency only. In the meantime, sub-50mph 4wd sounds reasonable.
