Being 18 and not able to (legally) buy guns (but i can buy the ammunition?) really sucks.

At least here in Texas, you can buy a rifle at 18, but any handgun is 21. Same goes for ammo ... 18-rifle/21-handgun. IIRC, that's a federal law, not a state law ... could be mistaken though. Wouldn't be the first time.

BIG BIG negative on all of that.

You have to be 21 to purchase a handgun from an FFL. You have to be 18 to poses one. SO... Buy from a private individual. and thats the law.

Well ... here in Texas ... I KNOW it's 18 to buy a long gun or ammunition for it and 21 to buy a handgun or ammunition for it.

Well you KNOW wrong it's typically store policy for places like wal-mart to NOT sell handgun ammo to people under 21, but it is certainly not the law.

http://www.lcav.org/states/Texas.asp#MinimumAgetoPurchasePossess
this is the best reference I could find.

"There is no minimum age to possess firearms under Texas law, although federal law generally prohibits the possession of a handgun or handgun ammunition by anyone under the age of 18. 18 U.S.C. º 922(x)(2), (3) and (5).

Federal law prohibits firearms dealers from selling or delivering a shotgun or rifle, or ammunition for a shotgun or rifle, to any person the dealer knows or has reasonable cause to believe is under the age of 18. 18 U.S.C. º 922(b)(1), (c)(1). Dealers are prohibited from selling or delivering other firearms (e.g., handguns) or ammunition for those firearms to any person the dealer knows or has reasonable cause to believe is under the age of 21. Id."

You even quoted it ... Dealers... FFL holders... not walmart, OR private citizens.

I can see you a handgun OR ammo if you are 18, and live in texas.

you can even get your concealed weapons permit at 18 if you are military.

Just don't get your thumb caught in the bolt when you release the slide.

Indeed. Somebody on another board posted pics of his Garand Thumb, blood under the nail and whatnot.

It just arrived last week from the CMP. It's a USGI field grade, sent my order in late October and just got it last week. It's a post-war Springfield, in better condition than I expected based on CMP's description. The park is real nice but the gas cylinder shows a little more wear than the other metal. All the parts I could identify so far are SA, except for the HRA bolt. Stock has some dings and some areas where the finish (shellac?) either chipped off or smeared, but it's pretty nice overall. The bore is shiny with good lands & grooves, and I don't have gauges to measure but the informal bullet test says muzzle wear should be well under 2. Haven't gotten to shoot it yet though. Gotta clean off some gunk, and I'll probably wait for the weather to warm up just a bit before hitting the range. Oh man I can't wait! Gettin giddy.

This is a rifle I finished building in the summer of 2006. The rifle is based on a large ring Mauser M48 action.

The rifle is fitted with a 28" Douglas XX premium barrel, 1 in 10 twist, 1.116" dia chamber to muzzle, cal 30-06, Boyd's target stock, Timmney adjustable trigger, Mk4 M3 3.5-10x40 mid-dot scope, 30mm QD scope rings.

The rifle is finished in a matt black oxide.

I shoot a hand loaded 178 gr molly bullet pushing 2814 fps at this time but hope to get that to 3000+ fps.

This rifle is designed for long range shooting, out to 1000 meters, and it's weight is 16+ lbs.

Actually the intended purpose of this rifle is not to shoot wild game. It is designed to be very accurate at any range from under a 100 meters out to 1000 meters and fired from a steady-rest, in some circles it is called a Black-Gun.

Having bought 3 handguns, and living in Texas, you cannot legally purchase a handgun in Texas if under the age of 21. You cannot even get handgun ammo, only ammo for long-guns. Every time I spoke with a person about identity verification and background check (no longer has more than a 20 min wait) on the phone they required that I be 21.
