Shipping shouldn't hurt too bad. Mine leaked from the input seal. Had to remove the big cover to replace that seal. Toyota only has it with the entire rebuild kit. Turns out, it's the same seal as the power steering pump. $4 at Napa.

My mechanic said my hoses to the power steering unit (1989 6 cyl auto) were leaking and for just under $600 he could replace them. He did get authorized to do the front brakes for $600, which sounded OK. But what's the deal with these hoses? Is Toyota trying to convince me that these older things are not economically maintainable?

Might be expensive hoses from Toyota. Maybe try to get replacements made at a hydraulic hose shop or even used hoses from a junkyard. Easy enough to replace.

My local dealer wanted $1,200 for a new box. I bought a remanufactured one from the local O'Reily autoparts store for $299 (Lifetime warranty). 1 year so far and no leaks....
