Hey everyone... I read the thread on the cap and rotor meltdown seems strange my self only had one situation lik with a rotor and it was because it wasn't on straight. So the rotor gouged out the cap. Anyway I ended up running autolight plugs when I did a tune-up chapions were recommended. I read somewhere it was a waist of money to use any of the high end plugs that claim better burning any thoughts on that? should I just stay with champion/autolights?

The engine was designed around a certain sparkplug.. ANY other plugs that CLAIM they fit are only copies of the original. The hotter and so forth claims are just horrible when you know what it is plugs actually do. All it takes is s small yellow spark to ignite the fire.. after that small yellow one all others are just fireing into already burnt gasses! Hotter...longer..or whatever don't do any better. RACE engines running higher compression and more rpm cannot run on the stock coils.. So THEY must have a stronger spark. That same system does NOTHING for our lil Jeep engines.. Keep it stock and you cannot go wrong. Big JIm

Thanks again BigJim, your advice seems to sound to argue. Since you put it in that perspective it finally made some since.

I've always had good luck with copper instead of platinum or whatever else it is they use. Kevin

Jim is 100% correct! I'd add that plugs do two things...hold in compression and ignite a/f mix. When comparing a new platinum against a new copper or splitfire or "rapid fire" the results are all the same. However just like replacing any worn out part, comparing a wasted plug performance with a new one can be very noticable. Thus the myth that a different "kind" of plug can make a difference. Not so much.
Can certain styles resist oil fouling and can a hotter range help keep carbon off? Maybe slightly.
I prefer standard Autolite plugs for everything except applications that call for an exotic plug (LS1 vette for example).

platinum plugs were made to last twice as long over the copper plugs, weather this is true or not i dont know but that was the hole reasoning behind making platinum plugs

One thing for sure with the advent of duelies the temp in the chamber has risen. Might be the newer plug types were needed to keep from melting. I just changed the plugs and wires on the wifes suburban after 108,000 miles and the plugs were still running good. I had never pulled them to give a look. The gap was about .065. They were NGK's from the factory 10 bucks each...I opted for the much cheaper replacements. I came near putting them back in like they came out but went ahead and spent the money.. prolly wasted it! I always liked NGK's but haven't bought any in decades. I remember them as being a less expensive brand, but then so was Subaru back then.

spark plugs are not designed for going 30+K miles, often at that and more mileage they get siezed in the head. It makes no difference if they are platinum.
