Supe the factory ones I pulled from the wifes car had some chrispy stuff on the threads...I took it to be a glue-lubricant. Whatever it is they used it worked fine for 108K.

Jim...the Suburban came stock with NGK's? Heh, I was in the parts store the other day and some guy was buying plugs for his Chebby...the employee went down the list to NGK's and the guy says "hell no, I'm not putting that ***** crap in my truck", heh.

I felt like "enlightening" him by letting him know that GM will be producing the new Equinox engines in CHINA because it's somehow cheaper to assemble them in China and ship here than send the parts from Detriot to Canada and back to the US.

When I worked in the parts store and you would look up (as my memory serves) a 97-99 Blazer the computer would ask you if it was manufactured in Saudi Arabia or Egypt (in addition to the USA being a choice). Heck, just the fact that we sold more parts for Blazers than any other vehicle would keep me from buying one!!!

One reason I always laugh when Chevy runs that "This is ouurrr counntryyyy" over and over again. If only the public was so informed, heh.

antisieze compound lasting for 100k? Nice, however not too bright. Plugs lasting that long? Nice, but not too bright.

But this is Jim we are talking about? Nice, but.....

And I on the other hand don't think it is too bright to take perfectly good plugs out and throw them away!! What the results are at 108K is NOTHING has changed! The same milage and no change in the engine responce. So changing them even at 108K did NOTHING for the engine performance.
The thing passed smog at about 104K. The reason I did change them is the wife thinks she can hear some pinging from time to time.. THAT did not change with the new plugs.. My old ears cannot hear any pinging but she says "listen to that! can you hear it?" No I cannot! But she still says it is doing whatever the noise is.

Humor?
Jim, maintenance is supposed to prevent the need for repairs. 8 plugs siezed into the heads because maintenence was ignored for waste of $36 (3 sets)in plugs is the problem here.

Jim don't encourage folks to do what you do, for most, they don't have the money time or skill to be doing major repairs instead of simple maintenance.

100k on a set of plugs is stupid on all levels.

Maintenance: change worn parts before failure.

Repair: change broken parts and everything the failure took with it.

Upgrade: go with heavy duty (or better than OE) parts or swap out known to weak parts for stronger ones before or after failure.

i have to agree with big jim on this one. new plugs are designed to go 100K miles. times change people just because before you werent supose to go that far with them doesnt mean you cant now, technology is getting better.

Most owners manuals suggest spark plugs every 30k, who cares if you "can" go longer.

Does anybody listen, have you ever dealt with threads pulled out of heads and plugs broken off? $36 seems like cheap insurance to me.

Sure there are "better" plugs out there, so you buy a $8 ea plug and 100k later you try and take them out to see if they realy didn't wear out, but they are stuck...see ya in the funny papers.

MAybe we need everyone here to read their manuel and get back to the board with the advised spark plug change in it.
MY MANUAL says pull, inspect and regap at 100,000 miles!

I have never heard of a spark plug getting stuck, or pulling the thread out of a cast iron head. I have heard this being an issue on Aluminum heads though, but I have never had first hand experience with this problem. However a simple removal of the spark plugs at 30K to inspect the plug, re-gap, and re-apply the antigallant to the threads would care of this as an issue with out having to replace the plugs that are still in serviceable condition.

I am personally one that believes in inspecting hardware and continuing to run parts that are still serviceable and replacing hardware when it is worn. DonÆt get me wrong though, I donÆt wait until my rig is stuck somewhere because something wore out, I do routine maintenance and inspect the items that need inspecting and replace what needs repair.

I'll have to review my owner's manual when I get home and see what it recommends for Spark Plug Inspection and Replacement.
