I can remember far enough back when, if something like that happened and they were caught by a certain group of people
in the area I grew up in it would be simple enough.
The three S's would be applied and then things would settle down for a while.

There,so much for the PC crap.

But I think you're single best bet is if you catch the guy redhanded on video, and if he happens to just be a local punk teeny bopper, as many times they are..I would sue the pants off him and his parents. That would probably have more of an affect on them and their lives than any action with the Police would. Especially a teeny bopper, because they get even less punishment for crimes like that than adults do.

Sue them for the amount of stolen goods or is there more? Overall I just want to prevent further theft from going on, and I want to punch him/her in the face. I am also going to talk to the landlord because I don't know if I read it somewhere but somehow he is required to put effort into resolving it (might have to find documentation on that one)? Also getting a light put in would be good.

I'm not sure what the law is there, but merchants can usually sue for something like 3 times the amount of stolen goods in a theft case, just as an example.

In your case, I would at least sue for the amount of lost goods, the damage to the vehicle, plus every single minute of lost time resolving the damage, etc, at something like $20-30/hour.

You have to be reasonable in a court and that's certainly reasonable. If the law allows you more, then go for it. You'll probably end up doing this in small claims court, though becuase the overall amount will be within that system and you probably don't want to have to deal with a lawyer.

Video is good but digital camera with a intervalometer that will take a picture ever few seconds might be better. I've seen video footage and it's not great for ID.

Sure would be great to get a dummy car and load it up with goodies. I have a junker fried motherboard laptop if you need it Bait they can't resist! Have the car rigged with lots of lighting. A simple glass break detector could trigger the lights.

Also try getting the local news "investigative reporter" on your side. Maybe they would do a 60's minutes sting for you.

Other idea's, see how much a private security company will charge to patrol your lot a few times. If you can get enough people to fork over $10 or $20 it might cover it ever month.

I had my convertible knifed two times in San Diego, I never locked the doors. Friggen idiots!

Rather then beat the guy up, try ruining his life. Good old revenge can be very satisfying...
