Mid(?) to late 2nd Gens had the modified 12 bolt, bigger ring/pinion, axle shafts. I've been keeping my eye out for 4.77 thirds. I own a 96 Trooper, would the third members be "plug and play" or will anything else have to be changed out?

As long as you don't have the modified 12 bolt, then it'd be essentially just swapping out the 3rds. I think you've got the standard 12 bolt still. I *think* the switch was in 98? Hopefully someone that knows for sure will chime in and confirm the year that they started the modified 12 bolt. Richard

I've been keeping my eye out for 4.77 thirds. Eric, keep my name handy... I might be looking to sell our 4.77 thirds out of our '89 RS here in the next couple of months. -Rob

Might be a minor issue with the ABS, but I don't know the details.

I think you're right, Steve. The earlier 12-bolt used one sensor mounted in the 3rd member for ABS. Later versions had a sensor mounted at each wheel. Not sure when the transition was, though.

Might be a minor issue with the ABS, but I don't know the details. I honestly have not done alot of reserch on the 4.77 thirds, I just pay attention to what gets posted (and by whom). Most say it's a direct swap, but I know mine has an ABS sensor on top of the rear third that would have to be addressed. I'm guessing that I would just have to disable the ABS and tie the harness up out of the way.
