On the drivers side axel tubes i have 3 inch cracks just under the spring perches. I was advised to find another axel housing rather than have them welded. Is this the correct way to address them? The other issue is finding a housing. I was told by toyota that I would need to find one from another '96 4x4 t100 with the automatic. Is this true, or would any 4x4 housing work?

This is farely common, just clean it up good and weld it.

I did a quick lookup of axle housings, there is a difference between abs and non abs, but I don't know how significant it is.
The advise they gave you had to do with gear ratios I suspect, which isn't a problem if you use your current pumpkin.

And yes, the ABS difference is significant if you plan on reusing your old axleshaft/brake assemblies. Its also possible (?) that the 2wd housing would work too, but you'd have to switch the spring perches from SUA to SOA (spring under axle to spring-over). car-part.com is the first place I'd be looking for housings...

Weld them. Had it done twice (re-weld ALL the seams...or else a heavy load unloaded will bring it back elsewhere)

How do you know if the assembly housing is the only thing that is effected, when it happened I was on the way home about 2 minutes from my house...car would vibrate at certain speeds.
