Any particular years that this is more common on? mine hasnt have any problems of this sort, im guessing it is due the stresses from the spring perch...that picture was looking pretty ugly, but fixable on the cheep.

all years seem to be equally bad. i think blocks make it worse. axle wrap would tend to be forcing the front end of the perch up against the spring pack thus pulling the back away as seen in the pic. just a thought. just remove the u-bolts and get the brake line out of the way. we used TIG on one and SMAW on the other.

Are you draining all the fluid out before welding? Or just jacking the one side up high to get the oil to the other side.

very easy to clean up and weld. i did mine and jroc's axles. they have held up just fine. Yep, I cleaned mine and had it welded - then drove another 100K <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

hell, i never even jacked it up on one or drained it. it appears as though the crack shown in this thread is pretty big, so i might in that case. my cracks were not that big. it can't hurt to drain it.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
Hi all, Sorry to dig up an old post, but I have a cracked axle housing on my 97 T-100. The thing that is different from all the posts is that the leak is not at the spring, but right next to the hub on the right rear tire. The fluid is leaking out onto the wheel and has fouled up my right rear brake pads twice in around 8K miles. Has anyone seen this issue yet, or are they usually cracking only at the leaf spring? I'll get some pictures on soon, but any advise you have is appreciated.
Thanks,
Vern

Erik, Thanks for the reply. I took off the brake drum and got a good look inside. Both brake pads are saturated in a kind of oily grease, and there is build up on the inside of the wheel where it has dripped down. The stange thing is I can't pin point an area where the fluid is coming from. The center of the axle area looks pretty dry compared to the brake pads. I'm planning on taking it in to a local shop and having them replace the wheel bearings and seals (due for it anyways at 134,000)
Thanks again,
Vern

There is no visible leak coming from the brake cylinders and the level looks good. I'm thinking the axle seal went bad, the fluid is leaking out behind the wheel assembly and then being thrown out whil driving. It's a bit of a mess, but hopefully some new seals will fix it.
