Getting the Wheeling Fever
A local junk yard is selling a '91 LS with 58,000 miles for $800.

Coolant is in the oil. Wheels are mismatched and it needs new rubber. Rear carpet has been ripped out. Otherwise it looks as clean a GenI example as I've seen. Nice wood dash too - is that a stock option?

Aye! second that!

Although i'd of course try and talk them down. Tell 'em you'll give em the asking price of $800 if they find you a nice matching set of rims!

Coolant in the oil? probably just a head gasket. Probably!

Likely needs at least a head job with new valve stem seals, VLA's (valve lash adjusters, aka: lifters), timing components (belt&tensioner), water pump (might as well)....I'd say easily $300-400 in engine materials and probably another $200-300 for machine work if you have the heads gone over professionally.

Carpet...well RockAuto and JC Whitney sells complete new cheap-o and nice grade sets of carpet for between $100 and $350 or so last I checked 6 months back. If it's just the rear cargo area you can also probably just go with a large rubber mat. Easier to clean for all the crap you'll likely put back there.

If you have previous Monty experience, I'd definitely go for it. Piece if cake

If you have none, I understand your hesitation but would still say go for it! I'm sure 50% of the people here will say the same thing...the other 50% will tell you otherwise just so they themselves can have a crack at it!

Good luck!

It could also have massive amounts of rust on the bearings and cylinder walls from having water in the oil. How long has it sat? Make sure you tell them that when making your offer

Being in the salvage industry, I'd say you are getting a good deal. Bring $600 in 1 pocket. $50 in another, $75 in another, $100 in another. Offer $600 first, wave the cash in front of them ( $20's look better).

I could sell the trans for $400, TC for $300, diff's for $250 apiece, windshield for $125, column for $75 - 150, HAZZARD SWITCH for $50, seats $50 - bouncy, $100, fenders for $65 ea..... You catch my drift?

If you agree on a price that you like, then ask if you can get some matching rims ( every yard has them ).

Understand that we are getting $20. apiece for aluminum rims. DO NOT try to gert them for free. Ask for Toyota 4X4 steelies off a taco, should be plentiful.

Also, after all of that stuff was sold or inventoried, they will still get around $200 in scrap weight.

Body Damage is Cool
Well it is a good deal indeed but still you cannot trust those 58k miles...It probably broke some time ago or someone tampered it...Again, like yankneck696 said, it is a good deal anyway...I wish I had the space to start a project like that.

Makes me feel good about my recent purchase. 1991 Montero LS, Texas truck, no rust, pistons, heads , valves already done. Runs and drives great. Perfect interior, great tread left, will need to fix pax side mirror, blast the rims and repaint, repaint some of the black plastic window trim pieces on the outside. 500.00 with a full tank of petrol! From a friend of course. Pix when I get it home, Im out on a trip sitting in San Antonio in ice.

Thanks for the info...

But it's like dating a beautiful woman - Oh how I want to, but really just not worth the trouble. No guts no glory, I guess.

Anyway, if any of you near Utah feel bolder than I, it's located out on the 201, at the the U-Pull-It in the Salt Lake Valley.

Sexy in Black too. Good luck with her.
