There is no MAF on your 22re.

You have a Air Flow Meter. And it is BEST to leave it alone...

The TPS advances the timing when you hit the throttle, just above idle.
Check your timing- at IDLE, timing at 7* and at 2000rpm about 14*.

For your smog test;
Pulling the spark plugs and making sure the whole ignition system is working good.
The EFI is pretty much computer controlled all the components need to be working for the system to preform like it should.
Sounds like you have a RICH unburnt fuel condition...something is not right.

Low fuel pressure will spit gas into the cylinders instead of mist and cause a rich condition.
A bad water temp sensor will also cause a slight rich condition...
