Re: 85 Toy PU, 22RE, 4x4, auto, extra cab, 140k miles, one owner.
After setting my idle speed I ended up with a "rich" odor from the exhaust gases.
Also, in testing my Throttle Position Sensor(TPS) some measurements and procedures failed to match that described in my "85 Toyota Pickup & 4Runner Repair Manual."
Note: My Repair Manual is identical to what is referred to on this site as a FSM (Field Service Manual?) and I have downloaded from this site, although I could not find from where when I looked today. The FSM file downloaded as "toyota4runner.pdf."
The specifics of my idle resetting were:
After setting the "throttle stop screw" (TSS) at 1/4 turn after touching, and setting the idle at 750rpm, I got this "rich" odor from the exhaust gases.
When testing my TPS, between the IDLE and E(2) contacts, my FSM (page FI-62) says that after setting the TSS at 1/4 turn, after contact, there is supposed to be a 'deflection" point from continuity to no-continuity when changing between thickness gauges from one of 0.57 mm to one of 0.85 mm.
Note: Page FI-62 of the FSM is approximately page 229 of my pdf file. (out of a total of 1025 pages)
The deflection point on my TPS occurs at about 1/16th turn of the TSS (after contact) (1/16th turn is as best I can estimate) and without using any thickness gauge.
Also when testing the TPS between the IDLE and E(2) contacts, and prior to the deflection point, I measured resistances from 7K to 13K ohms. The FSM calls for "less than 2.3K ohms."
Note: I can only perform this deflection test with the TSS just barely touching, or I can not detect the deflection point. i.e. all measurements produce no-continuity.
At this point I have adjusted the TSS at approx. 1/16th turn and the idle at 750rpm and get a slightly rich odor. My concern is that I may get whip-sawed at my next smog test.
Any comments on:
1) smog test?
2) testing procedure?
3) path forward?
tks...
You should be setting your idle at 850rpm to start with for an auto tranny. I agree that the TPS should be dialed in prior to any other idle work being done to it, though I'd also check your auxilury air valve as that can cause the idle and mixture to be thrown off. You may also check your fuel pressure regulator if the other fixes don't work <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
