Getting the Wheeling Fever
Need Engine Help
The jeep was runnin fine until a few days ago. I changed the oil like I allways do using a known brand two weeks ago (penzoil I think but usually I use castrol syntec blend). It got COld the last few days and the jeep ran fine this morning but when I started it up this afternoon it was puttering really badly. It sounded like the timing was way off. I drove it home tonite and while it drove "OK" it was puttering and really rough at Idle.

For grins I popped open the air cleaner and where the oil breather attaches to it there was smoke coming out out of it. There was also some oil on my air filter. The exahuast sounds real rough and puttering.

The only thing that's different is the oil change and the recent freezing temps. I hadn't noticed any pools of antifreeze but the back half of the engine looked like it might have been covered in liquid. I can't tell if that's new or not as I havn't had time to get underneath it. It was also runnin a few degrees hotter than usual.

Any Idears?

Cracked block
Missing cylnder
Timing
Senser

I'm don't even know where to start.

PS for those who aren't familure with my jeep sagas it is 93 Wrangler with a farily new re-manufactrued 4.0 6 Cyl

I'd start by finding out what that liquid was.. AND what it might have got into and shorted out. I'd pull the radiator cap and make sure it was FULL of coolant.
If everything is Ok I'd check for fuel pressure and then start on the lectrics.

Thanks jim, I'm not sure where you are in Tx but down here in San Antonio it got freezing cold and I've never seen my jeep covered in a sheet of ice. It's lived in the desert the last 10 years.

Check oil level if it is high or foamy you may have a blown HG this could raise your crankcase oil level until it comes out your breather.

Boise I have never seen a blown headgasket that did not first reveal itself by puking coolant and overheating.

I agree with you but he did say the back half of his engine was covered w/ liquid.(could be a 70/30 mix of coolent and oil)He also said it was running hotter and he took his aircleaner off and he had oil out of his crank case breather. I dont know how long his commute home is but I would still say it could be anything from an overfill of oil to a blown HG. IMHO

This is kind of an old bump but the saga continues. I replaced all the plugs wires rotor and cap and that seemed to fix the problem. It turns out it only fixed they symptoms as I have a cylinder that isn't firing. To top it off I pulled the plugs again today and the number one was covered in black. (these are only a couple weeks old) the other ones didn't look like this.

The fill cap and breather had brown sludge

and last but not least the overflow bottle is completly foamy.

Blown HG?

WHERE DO YOU LIVE??? Is the oil stick showing overfill?
Did you install a new plug to see if IT WOULD FIRE?
The miosture in the cap is common this time of the year up north! Most folks don't take the cap off and FIND IT!
It is due to short trips and condensation forming in the top of the engine... It has happened to many vehicles for many years without bad effects. Once the engine reaches 205* for a while the moisture evaporates and no harm has been done.
THE TWO PROBLEMS are not connected.
Work on the sparky and forget about the moisture...unless you have an extra couple of quarts in the oil pan.
