I'm thinking of getting a 95.5 - 97 Rodeo. Would like the mpg of the 4cyl. Is the 2.6 a reliable motor? Any common problems with them? Thanks for the help.

Keep the valves adjusted every 10-15k miles and the cooling system flushed/refilled every 2 years and they are great engines. They have a tendency to blow head gaskets/crack heads when allowed to overheat... but said overheating is usually a result of owners slacking on regular maintenance such as the items above.

I wouldn't expect to get steller fuel economy out of that truck, BTW (just depends what you are expecting). Yes, its a 4 cyl; but its a 4 cyl strapped to a heavy truck with the aerodynamic properties of shipping crate.

I can't imagine most owners check valves every 10-15k miles? Does the 2.6 have more issues than most motors with keeping valves in spec?

Any ideas on real world mpg for 2.6/5spd/4wd Rodeo? I'm hoping for 20 mpg average.

Most manufacturers recommend manually adjusted valves in the 15k range.

... and you're right, "most" people don't do it...just like
they don't do any other maintenance on their vehicles until it's too late.

I think this is very doable. I got 20 in both my 87 2.6/5-speed Trooper, and my 92 3.1/5-speed Rodeo. Keep in mind both were completely stock suspension and tire size.

Good luck

Is this confirmed? I've read reports that the 2.6 was offered with 4wd in the Rodeo. It was NOT available in the Passport. Also, looking at ads, I'll occasionally find them listed with 4cyl (including displacement) and 4wd. Just haven't found one in person yet...

IIRC, one of the guys in our group has a 94-ish Rodeo with the 2.6 + MUA5 combo. We have a trail run tomorrow; so I'll look into it and report back. I know for sure that he has the MUA5; but those also came behind some 3.2's and just had a different patterned integrated bellhousing.

Body Damage is Cool
THAT IS CORRECT THE RODEOS NEVER CAME WITH 4 CYL AND 4WD ANY YEAR, IN 90-92 THE 4CYL CAME WITH THE MUA MANUAL TRANS AND THE 90-92 V6 CAME WITH THE MUA,

93-99 CAME WITH THE BORGWARNER IN 4CYL 2WD
ALL 4WD CAME WITH THE MUA TRANS
AND AFTER 92 ALL V6 VEH CAME WITH THE MUA IN MANUAL
ODDLY IN 2002 THE 4CYL WENT BACK TO THE MUA TRANS

Not that Jerry didn't already clear this up; but the guy I mentioned above came out to the trail run today and he does have the 3.2 SOHC in his Rodeo.
